Product Description

Encaustic cement tiles are handmade cement tiles finished by way of hydraulic press and therefore are non-fired. Encaustic cement tiles are applicable in most conventional tile applications when installation instructions are followed, and tiles are sealed accordingly.

Certification

Geon encaustic cement tiles are manufactured to the Standard for Cement Tile TCVN 6065:1995 [QUACERT #SP1616/2.18.15] and in a facility that is ISO 9001:2015 certified. All Geon factories are required to meet the ISC Social Code of Conduct.

Manufacturing & Assembly

Equipment: Tile mold, frame, and a hydraulic press.
Material: Natural pigments, Portland cement and concrete.
Process Steps:
  1. A metal divider mold is placed into the frame and filled with pigments, according to the specified colour pattern.
  2. The divider mold is filled with pigment to a total thickness of approximately 2mm.
  3. The divider mold is removed, and the pigments sections flow to meet.
  4. A layer of Portland cement and sand is spread over the pigment layer.
  5. A layer of concrete is spread over the Portland cement.
  6. The pigment, Portland cement and concrete are mechanically pressed at approximately 1,800 psi.
  7. The tile is removed from the frame, inspected, and stacked.
  8. Tiles are placed into a water bath, racked to dry, and then inspected once more.
  9. Before shipping, the tiles are pre-polished, checked for alignment and given a light coat of factory sealer.

Physical Characteristics

Abrasion: Measured scratch resistance, when sealed, is comparable to marble and is no greater than 0.45 g/cm2
Breaking Load: As measured by equal pressure on entire tile face, is no less than 100 daN per tile.
Water Absorption: Water absorption is not greater than 10%.
Acid Resistance: No acid resistance properties - clean with pH neutral cleaners.

Coefficient of Friction

Static - dry average: 0.85
Static - wet average: 0.60

Use in Wet Areas

Encaustic cement tiles are safe for use in wet areas such as showers, spas and pool decks but not recommended for surfaces that are submersed in water.

Sealing

Geon Tile must be sealed upon installation. Geon provides NanoSeal GT – an ultra-low gloss topical sealer designed to bond to the surface of the face layer – with each purchase. NanoSealGT is UV stable, VOC compliant, and meets performance characteristics of FDA for food contact surfaces.

Maintenance

Properly installed encaustic cement tile requires little maintenance beyond regular cleaning. Only use a pH neutral cleaner.

Freeze/Thaw

Encaustic cement tiles are not resistant to naturally occurring freeze/thaw cycles. As such, they are not recommended for outdoor areas in climates where this occurs.
